Short Review
Written years after the series concluded, this novel feels like a gentle encore, a return to the campfire warmth of the Ka-tet. It lacks the apocalyptic urgency of the main sequence, allowing for a more atmospheric and fable-like tone. The nested storytelling structure showcases King’s sheer joy in the act of spinning yarns. It gives a deeper look into the culture and folklore of Mid-World before it "moved on." While not strictly key to the plot of the Tower, it adds texture and heart to the saga, serving as a beautiful, meditative interlude that reminds readers why they fell in love with this world in the first place.
