The Waste Lands

The Waste Lands

The Ka-tet moves inland from the beach, following the Path of the Beam that holds the Tower in place. As they train to become gunslingers, the paradox of Jake Chambers' existence threatens to drive Roland and the boy insane. To save them, the group must bring Jake back from 1977 New York. Their journey leads them to the decaying city of Lud, where they face a psychotic AI train named Blaine the Mono, who loves riddles and plans to crash himself into the wasteland.

Short Review

The Waste Lands expands the lore in a meaningful way, introducing the concept of the Twelve Beams and the Guardians. The world-building moves from the abstract to the concrete, revealing the technologically more advanced ruins of the "Old People." The sequence in the city of Lud is a masterclass in atmospheric horror, depicting a society that has devolved into tribal madness. However, the true highlight is Blaine the Mono, one of fiction’s most memorable villains - a terrifying mix of childish petulance and godlike power. The narrative drives forward with the momentum of a runaway train, ending on a cliffhanger that tormented fans for years. It is the book where the group truly becomes a family unit.
